The Review: An intense and well-acted drama based loosely on the later life of Hollywood horror film creator and director James Whale (Ian McClellan). Generally edgy and rather dark (with some disturbing flashbacks to the trenches of WWI), enlivened with a few flashes of humor, including Vanessa Redgrave as Whale's devoted, if quirky, housekeeper. With Brendan Fraser in a breakthrough, serious role as the gardener who becomes Whale's foil, antagonist and, eventually, friend.
