The Review: WWII, the attempt to retake Guadalcanal in the South Pacific. A psychological study of war and warriors, notably inferior to Saving Private Ryan, and both less intense and less focused. One problem is that this is a character study with a lot of characters: a litany of almost any actor you can name parading on the screen, some too briefly, others for much too long. Good cinematography and music; ultimately uninteresting and under-edited. Based on the novel by James Jones.
