The Review: Partly an avenging cop flick, partly a commentary on the drug scene, partly a puzzle: who is "Diablo"? A pair of undercover cops (Diesel and Tate) help the DEA take down a major drug lord (Fernandez), but while imprisoned, his turf is taken over by a newer, more brutal crime lord nicknamed "El Diablo." Events conspire to turn Diesel into a rogue agent, and we are expected to sympathize with him in his quest for justice.
A lot of soul searching, or what passes for soul searching, attempts to portray Diesel as a good guy, but it doesn't quite come off. He's still a marginal bully wearing a badge, with some unsavory friends, and an attitude. The plot twists do not rescue things. Not bad, just not very engaging.
