The Review: Wonderful story with lots of subtle nuances & fine touches of humor -- many in the background, but even so, often of great importance. The narrator sets out to describe how she came to be born, and wanders down a path that at first seems direct, but soon becomes convoluted. You eventually do find out who her parents are and how they met, but it takes awhile, and is not at all obvious. So much for seven degrees of connection...
This quiet film grows on you: you get drawn in by looking for clever events happening in the background, and stay for the whole story. The animated style is quite simple, unadorned and apparently hand-drawn.
Well narrated by Liv Ullmann. From Norway & Canada.
(Deserving) winner of the 2006 Academy Award for animated short feature; other nominees included Maestro, Little Matchgirl and No Time for Nuts. Other animated short features (screened at the same time) that qualified or were shortlisted for Oscar nomination included One Rat Short, The Passenger, The Wraith of Cobble Hill, Guide Dog, and Gentlemen's Duel.
